* CALL TO ACTION FOR AN ACCESSIBLE METRO SYSTEM * BEFORE WHEELCHAIRS FLY
WHO: RAPLIQ members and all those who believe the metro should be accessible before 2085.
WHEN: Thursday, September 29th 2011 @ 9:30 AM
WHY : The Montreal Transit Commission (STM) is holding an international symposium on the future of public transit on September 29th. Last spring Michel Labrecque, president of the STM, claimed that it would be impossible for the STM to follow the Montreal transit plan adopted in 2008. That plan stated that three metro stations would be made accessible per year. Now they say that less than one station will become accessible per year from now through 2016. We must demonstrate and demand that universal access becomes a priority now! While our requests are realizable, the slowness of what the STM now proposes is completely unreasonable and illegal.* By not following through on the promise of making Montreal public transportation more accessible, the STM perpetrates the errors of the past and continues to discriminate against thousands of people – together, let’s make our voices heard!
- That the STM honors and follows through with the Montreal transit plan adopted in 2008 by making three metro stations accessible per year!
- That the Ministère des Transports du Québec allocates necessary funding immediately!
